Department of Adabul Arabi (Takhassus Fil Adab Al-Arabi)
“More than a course; it is a commitment to the preservation of the Arabic spirit and the philosophy of eloquence.”
About the Program
The Takhassus Fil Adab Al-Arabi (Specialization in Arabic Literature) is a rigorous postgraduate-level immersion into the Arabic-Islamic literary tradition. Designed for advanced students, this program bridges the gap between basic linguistic proficiency and advanced philological expertise. It shifts the focus from the “mechanics of language” to the “philosophy of eloquence,” utilizing the tools of Balagha (Rhetoric) and Naqd (Literary Criticism) to explore Arabic discourse from the Jahiliyya period to the modern era.
Learning Objectives & Core Goals
- Philological Mastery: Achieve a profound understanding of classical Arabic vocabulary, archaic structures, and semantic shifts over centuries.
- Rhetorical Competence: Master the three branches of Balagha—Ma’ani (Semantics), Bayan (Imagery), and Badi’ (Embellishment)—as formal analytical frameworks.
- Critical Inquiry: Cultivate the ability to engage with classical and modern texts through traditional and contemporary literary theories.
Unlocking the Linguistic Miracle of Sacred Texts
A key focus of this course is providing the prerequisite knowledge of Ilm al-Balagha. By understanding these sciences, students can unlock the layers of I’jaz (inimitability) in the Holy Qur’an and Hadith, discovering how word order, brevity, and metaphor contribute to the miraculous impact of the Divine Word.
Curriculum Overview
Our comprehensive curriculum maintains a strong foundation in the Classical Tradition (Turath) while incorporating the Arabic Renaissance (Nahda) to understand the evolution of the Arabic identity.
- Diwan al-Arab (The Poetic Canon): An in-depth study of the Mu’allaqat, Abbasid panegyrics, and Andalusian Muwashshahat.
- Nathr al-Adabi (Literary Prose): Exploration of the Maqamat genre, historical orations, and philosophical treatises.
- Al-Balagha al-Wafiya (Comprehensive Rhetoric): An exhaustive study utilizing primary texts, such as those by Al-Jurjani.
- Al-Tareekh al-Adab al-Arabi: The History of Arabic Literature and Arabic Orthography.

(The program features a rigorous engagement with the works of legendary authors like Imru’ al-Qais, Al-Mutanabbi, Abu Tammam, Al-Jahiz, and Ibn Khaldun).
Skills & Competencies Developed
- Hermeneutics & Poetic Analysis: The ability to decipher complex metaphors and analyze the prosody (Arud) of classical verse.
- Advanced Oratory (Khitabah): Refining the skills of formal address with a focus on logical argumentation and emotional resonance.
- Creative Composition (Insha’): Developing a sophisticated, high-register writing style suitable for academic and literary publication.
Career Prospects & Theological Benefits
Professional Opportunities: Graduates are well-prepared for roles in Academic Research, Specialized Translation, Cultural Journalism, Diplomacy, and Cultural Advocacy on international platforms.
Benefits for Theology (Usul al-Din): In Islamic Theology, a master of Adab is a master of the source texts. This specialization is vital for scholars of Tafsir (Exegesis) and Fiqh (Jurisprudence), providing the stylistic context necessary to accurately interpret Divine Law and avoid errors rooted in a superficial understanding of Arabic rhetoric.
Admissions & Eligibility
Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must hold a degree in Arabic or Islamic Studies (or an equivalent Madrasa qualification) with a high level of proficiency in Nahw (Grammar) and Sarf (Morphology). A qualifying entrance examination in literary analysis is typically required.
